Sevier Lake
Lake Intermittent saline lake in west-central Utah
A seasonal saline lake in Utah’s Sevier Desert, often reduced to flats and mud. A remnant of Pleistocene Lake Bonneville, photographers and birdwatchers visit for stark landscapes west of Delta.
Sevier Lake is an intermittent saline lake and dry lakebed in the Sevier Desert of west-central Utah, United States. It is an endorheic basin that historically received inflow from the Sevier River and surrounding streams.
Seasonal and interannual water coverage is highly variable, producing a shallow, briny lake when inflows are sufficient and a broad salt flat when dry. The site is primarily of interest for remote landscape photography, saltflat observations and hydrological study rather than typical recreational use.
The lake has seen major reductions in persistent surface water since the early 20th century as upstream waters have been diverted for irrigation and agriculture. Changes in regional water management and climate have left the basin largely episodic in its appearance.
Sevier Lake sits within the Sevier Desert in central Utah. It occupies a remote, low-lying basin in the Great Basin region and is accessed from local rural roads rather than a nearby city.
- Hydrology: An endorheic basin with highly variable surface water that has been dry for extended periods during the 20th and 21st centuries.
Tips for Visiting Sevier Lake #
- Plan a spring visit after snowmelt if you want to see Sevier Lake with water and migratory birds; in dry years the basin is predominantly a salt flat, which is best photographed at sunrise or sunset.
- Do not drive onto the lakebed when it's wet-stick to established roads and check local road and weather conditions before turning off for viewpoints, as the playa becomes hazardous quickly.
Best Time to Visit Sevier Lake #
Visit in spring (March-May) for the best chance of seeing water in this often-ephemeral lake and for milder temperatures.
