Main image

The Seven Sisters (De syv søstrene) are a group of seven separate waterfalls that drop from the steep mountainsides into the Geirangerfjord in Møre og Romsdal, Norway. The falls form a distinctive cluster on one side of the fjord opposite a single falling stream traditionally known as the ‘Suitor’ (Friaren).

The ensemble is noted for its vertical streams that pour directly into the fjord and is a frequent feature on fjord cruises and sightseeing tours through Geirangerfjord. Multiple viewpoints along the fjord road and water-level perspectives from tour boats provide contrasting views of the falls.

These waterfalls are natural features of the glacially carved Geirangerfjord and have no constructed elements. The surrounding fjord and mountain terrain formed during repeated glacial and post-glacial processes, leaving steep cliffs and high relief that create the conditions for such falls.

Located in the Geiranger area of Møre og Romsdal county, the Seven Sisters tumble into the protected Geirangerfjord, a long narrow fjord that opens to the Norwegian Sea; the village of Geiranger lies at the fjord head and is the nearest settlement with visitor facilities.

  • Viewing tips: best viewed from sightseeing boats on Geirangerfjord or from road viewpoints on the fjord rim such as Flydalsjuvet; the falls are most active during spring snowmelt.
