Sevanavank

Sevanavank is an Armenian monastic complex on the northwest shore of Lake Sevan, dating to the 9th century and known for its compact pair of medieval churches. The site occupies a prominent headland with wide views across the lake.

The complex consists of small stone churches and monastic buildings clustered on the headland, with easy walking access between the chapels and a lookout point offering broad views over Lake Sevan. The architecture is characteristic of medieval Armenian ecclesiastical design and attracts visitors for both religious and landscape photography.

The monastery was established in the 800s and served as a religious centre and retreat; historically it stood on an island but Soviet-era lowering of Lake Sevan transformed the site into a peninsula, changing access and the surrounding landscape. The complex has been subject to periodic restoration to preserve its medieval fabric.

Sevanavank sits on a promontory on the northwest shore of Lake Sevan, in Gegharkunik province of Armenia, approximately 60 km northeast of Yerevan; the site overlooks the lake and surrounding highland steppe.
