Sesriem Canyon is a natural, narrow gorge in the Namib Desert of Namibia, located at the entrance area to the Namib-Naukluft National Park near the Sesriem campsite. It is a prominent local attraction formed by water erosion and is one of the more accessible canyons in the park.

The canyon offers a short, easily walked route of winding passages and steep walls that visitors can explore on foot; the main accessible stretch is roughly 1 kilometre in length and exposes layered sedimentary rock up to about 30 metres high. Shaded pools form after rains and several small side passages provide photographic viewpoints and close-up geology.

The gorge was carved over geological time by the seasonal Tsauchab River, which cuts through the surrounding desert deposits during episodic floods. The shape and depth of the canyon reflect repeated episodes of erosion and deposition in the Namib plain.

Sesriem Canyon sits within the Namib-Naukluft National Park, adjacent to the Sesriem campsite and park entrance, and close to the Sossusvlei dune fields in central Namibia. The surrounding landscape is typical hyper-arid desert with sparse vegetation and extensive sand seas.

  • Dimensions: Approximately 1 kilometre long and up to 30 metres deep, carved by the seasonal flow of the Tsauchab River.

How to Get to Sesriem Canyon #

Sesriem Canyon lies inside Namib-Naukluft National Park near the Sossusvlei/Sesriem entrance. Most visitors reach the area by paved or gravel roads from Sesriem settlement and the park entrance near the NamibRand; the drive from the small settlement of Sesriem to the canyon is short (a few kilometres) and well signposted. The nearest major towns are Solitaire (about 60-70 km northwest by gravel road) and the coastal town of Walvis Bay (around 300-350 km north). Self-drive is the normal option; 4x4 is useful when combining with deep dune sites, but the access road to the canyon itself is normally passable in a 2WD in good conditions.

Tips for Visiting Sesriem Canyon #

  • Arrive at first light to walk the canyon with cool air and soft, shafted light - midday walls become oven-hot and the shadows disappear.
  • Pair a visit with Sossusvlei and Deadvlei: drive early from Sesriem entrance station and allow at least half a day for dunes plus the canyon.
  • Bring a small headlamp or flashlight if planning to explore low, narrow parts; shoes with good grip help on steep, sand-polished rock.
