Serranía de Cuenca
Mountains Karstic mountains and canyons, UNESCO geopark area
East of Madrid, the Serranía de Cuenca mixes limestone gorges, karst formations and the old city of Cuenca with its hanging houses; visitors hike, explore caves and photograph gorges over the Huécar and Júcar rivers.
Serranía de Cuenca is a mountainous natural region in the province of Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha, known for its dramatic limestone landscapes and deep river gorges. It is a major local destination for geological sights and outdoor walking.
The area contains prominent karst features including the scenic rock labyrinth known as the Ciudad Encantada, wooded gorges and several waterfall and spring sites such as the Nacimiento del Río Cuervo. Walkers also come for cliff-top trails and viewpoints overlooking the deep canyons cut by the Júcar and Huécar rivers.
Human settlement in the Serranía has long been linked to small mountain towns and villages in and around the city of Cuenca, with routes and trackways serving pastoral and timber economies. Over time parts of the area have been protected for their geological and ecological interest.
The Serranía surrounds and extends north and east of the city of Cuenca in central Spain, occupying upland terrain of the Iberian System with roads connecting to Cuenca and other regional towns.
- Accessibility: Several named sites within the Serranía de Cuenca are popular day visits from the city of Cuenca and are accessible by signed local roads and short hikes.
- Karst terrain: The landscape is dominated by limestone karst - expect caves, sinkholes and irregular rock formations in many popular spots.
What to See #
- Ciudad Encantada: Limestone rock formations created by karst weathering that form irregular towers, hollows and pillars frequently visited on short walks from nearby car parks.
- Nacimiento del Río Cuervo: A spring and waterfall area in the highlands known for a wooded gorge and accessible paths leading to cascades and pools in a karst source zone.
- Hoz del Júcar and Hoz del Huécar: Steep river gorges and cliffs carved by the Júcar and Huécar rivers, with roadside viewpoints and walking tracks along the canyon rims.
How to Get to Serranía de Cuenca #
The Serranía de Cuenca is reached by road from the city of Cuenca and from a number of small mountain villages that serve as gateways (for example Uña and Villalba de la Sierra). From Cuenca city centre expect drives of roughly 30-70 km to different parts of the massif via regional roads; follow directions to the chosen village or natural park entrance.
Once you reach a village or designated parking area, most sights and trails are reached on foot from the village centres or car parks - walking approaches from villages to trailheads are typically short (a few hundred metres to a few kilometres depending on the specific site).
