Serjilla
Ruins Ruined Byzantine town among Syria's Dead Cities
Serjilla, one of Syria’s ruined Byzantine towns in Idlib, preserves stone houses, cisterns and church remains; archaeologists and visitors study late‑antique rural architecture on site.
Serjilla is an archaeological ruin in northwestern Syria’s Idlib Governorate, one of the sites collectively known as the Dead Cities. It is recognised as part of the UNESCO World Heritage ‘Ancient Villages of Northern Syria.’
The site contains a compact village plan with stone-built houses, street layouts and civic features; many domestic buildings survive as substantial ruins. Visitors interested in early medieval domestic architecture will find readable house fronts, courtyards and public cistern systems. The scale is that of a medium-sized rural settlement rather than a single monumental complex.
Archaeologically the site belongs to the late Roman and Byzantine periods and shows evidence of habitation by a settled agricultural community and Christian congregations. Over time the village fell out of use and became one of the abandoned settlements that characterise the Dead Cities landscape.
Serjilla sits within the Dead Cities region of Idlib Governorate in northwestern Syria. The site occupies a hillside location among other ruined settlements in a rural, agricultural landscape.
- UNESCO listing: Included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing 'Ancient Villages of Northern Syria' as part of the Dead Cities group.
- Preservation: Noted for unusually good preservation of domestic architecture, with many stone houses and street plans still legible on site.
