Sera Monastery
Temple Important Lhasa monastery and center of Tibetan learning
A Gelug Buddhist monastery just outside central Lhasa, known for its lively monk debates, teaching halls and 15th-century assembly architecture.
Sera Monastery is a Gelugpa Tibetan Buddhist monastery north of Lhasa, founded in the early 15th century and one of the major monastic universities of Tibet. It has been an important centre for Buddhist scholarship and ritual since its establishment.
The complex includes extensive temple halls, living quarters and large open courtyards used for the characteristic hand-clapping debates between monks. Visitors commonly go to watch the debate sessions, see the assembly halls and view Buddhist art and statues; the site remains an active monastic institution.
Sera was founded in the early 1400s and developed as a seat of learning for the Gelug school; its academic role expanded over subsequent centuries. It underwent damage and periods of disruption in the 20th century and has since been partially restored while continuing religious training.
The monastery sits on the northern outskirts of Lhasa on the slopes above the Lhasa valley, within Tibet Autonomous Region. It is a short drive from central Lhasa and is typically visited together with other major Lhasa sites.

What to See #
- Sera Jey: One of two main colleges known for monastic study and ritual debate, founded as part of the monastery complex in the 15th century and preserving traditional classrooms and living quarters.
- Sera Mey: The second principal college, historically rival to Sera Jey, containing its own debating grounds and monastery buildings that house monks and students of Tibetan Buddhism.
- Debating courtyard: An open courtyard used for public tantric debate sessions where monks practice rapid question-and-answer debate; debates typically take place in the morning and are a major visitor attraction.
