Seoraksan
Mountain Dramatic mountain park famed for autumn foliage
Seoraksan’s granite peaks and craggy ridgelines form one of South Korea’s premier hiking areas; visitors ride the cable car, scramble marked trails and visit mountain temples while watching seasonal foliage.
Seoraksan is a rugged mountain massif and national park in northeastern Gangwon Province, South Korea, noted for steep granite peaks, deep valleys and a range of hiking trails. Its highest summit, Daecheongbong, reaches 1,708 metres and is a focal point for multi-day and day hikes.
The park contains a mixture of rocky ridgelines, forested slopes and cultural sites such as the historic Sinheungsa temple. Visitors use an established network of trails and there is a cable car that provides rapid access to popular ridge viewpoints for those who prefer shorter visits.
Seoraksan has long been a setting for cultural and religious activity and in the modern era has been protected as a national park to conserve its landscapes and biodiversity. The area is especially popular during autumn when broad-leaved forests produce vivid fall foliage.
Geographically Seoraksan is in northeastern South Korea near the east-coast city of Sokcho and is accessible by road from Seoul and other regional centres; park entrances and trailheads are located at several points along the massif.
- Peak and seasonality: The park's highest peak is 1,708 metres and autumn is the most popular season for visitors because of striking fall colours and clearer skies.
What to See #
- Daecheongbong Peak: Daecheongbong Peak - the park's highest summit at 1,708 metres and the objective of many longer hikes, offering panoramic mountain views in clear weather.
- Sinheungsa Temple: Sinheungsa Temple - an old Buddhist temple near the park entrance that serves as a cultural and spiritual waypoint for visitors, with historic buildings and statues.
- Gwongeumseong and cable car: Gwongeumseong cable car and ridge area - a cable car that provides quick access to rocky ridge viewpoints and short walks suitable for visitors with limited time.
How to Get to Seoraksan #
Seoraksan National Park is typically reached via the coastal city of Sokcho. From Seoul take an express bus from Dong-Seoul Bus Terminal to Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal (about 2.5-3 hours), then transfer to a local bus or shuttle to Seorak-dong/Seoraksan entrance (the local bus ride is around 20-40 minutes).
By car from Seoul expect roughly a 2.5-3 hour drive (route via expressways); parking and visitor facilities are available at the park entrances.
Tips for Visiting Seoraksan #
- Visit early in the morning, especially in autumn, to see peak foliage with far fewer day tourists and to secure a less-crowded spot on popular routes such as Ulsanbawi.
- Enter through the Seorak-dong (Sokcho) entrance to access the main cable car, the most-used trailheads and the visitor centre-this is the usual starting point for the park's signature hikes.
- If you want a quieter experience, choose lesser-used access points such as the Osaek or Heundeulbawi areas and hike beyond the main viewpoints where most tour groups turn back.
- Allow extra time to walk sections of the fortress-like ridges (Ulsanbawi and nearby trails) rather than relying solely on the cable car-the summit ridgelines reward the extra effort with panoramic views often missed by casual visitors.
Best Time to Visit Seoraksan #
Visit in autumn for peak foliage and excellent hiking conditions; summer is also good if you avoid rainy afternoons.
