Seokguram Grotto and Bulguksa Temple
Historical Site Grotto shrine and temple complex with monumental Buddha
Seokguram’s granite grotto houses a seated Buddha statue; nearby Bulguksa Temple presents wooden halls, stone pagodas and Joseon-era Buddhist architecture. Pilgrims and tourists visit for religious art, temple complexes and hillside views.
Seokguram Grotto and Bulguksa Temple are a paired cultural ensemble on Toham Mountain near Gyeongju in North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, representing high achievements of Unified Silla Buddhist art and architecture. Both monuments date primarily to the 8th century and are among Korea’s best-known early historic religious sites.
Seokguram is an artificial stone grotto forming a domed chamber that houses a large seated Buddha carved in stone, set within a sculptural program of attendant figures and reliefs. Bulguksa is a temple complex below the grotto containing halls, courtyards, stone bridges and the famous stone pagodas Dabotap and Seokgatap.
Both monuments were constructed in the Unified Silla period (8th century) and have undergone restorations in later centuries and modern conservation work. They illustrate religious patronage and sophisticated stone masonry from early medieval Korea.
The pair sits on the slopes of Toham Mountain near the city of Gyeongju; Bulguksa occupies lower slopes and the grotto is set higher on the mountain, linked by walkways and paths.
- Seated Buddha size: The seated Buddha in the grotto is carved in stone and measures approximately 3.5 metres in height, forming the focal point of the chamber.

Tips for Visiting Seokguram Grotto and Bulguksa Temple #
- Go early on a weekday-Bulguksa and Seokguram receive the bulk of tour buses later in the day, so arriving at opening gives a quieter experience at both monuments.
- Buy separate admission for Seokguram (it is ticketed separately from Bulguksa) and allow time to either take the park shuttle from Bulguksa or walk the uphill trail; the walk takes around 30-40 minutes and is the only pedestrian link between the two sites.
- Don't rush past Bulguksa's side structures-many visitors focus on the main halls but miss the smaller stone pagodas, inscriptions and the on-site museum that explain the complex's layout and history.
- If you want photography with fewer people in frame, linger at Bulguksa's terraces or the approach path to Seokguram late in the afternoon when tour groups start to depart.
