Seodaemun Prison

Seodaemun Prison is a former detention centre in Seoul that was used during the Japanese colonial period and is now preserved as the Seodaemun Prison History Hall museum and memorial.

The site preserves prison blocks, cells and exercise yards and presents exhibitions about Korea’s independence movement and the experiences of prisoners held there. Walk-through routes and informational displays document colonial-era repression and resistance.

Built by Japanese colonial authorities in the early 20th century, the prison was used to detain and, in some cases, execute Korean independence activists. After liberation, parts of the complex were retained and the site was later converted into a museum and memorial to those who suffered under colonial rule.

Located in the Seodaemun district of Seoul, the former prison sits within the urban fabric of the city and is served by public transport.
