Sentinel Dome

Sentinel Dome is a granite dome on the south rim of Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park, California, noted as an accessible high viewpoint within the park. It is commonly reached on a short day hike and is valued for panoramic vistas.

From the dome’s rounded summit visitors get near-complete 360-degree views that include Half Dome, El Capitan, Yosemite Valley, and stretches of the High Sierra. The summit is exposed rock with relatively open sightlines rather than dense forest.

A short, well-maintained trail leads to the top; the route is popular because it delivers dramatic views on a relatively brief hike and is often combined with nearby Glacier Point or Taft Point visits.

The dome is a granitic feature formed as part of Yosemite’s plutonic geology and shaped by erosion and exfoliation. The route and trail infrastructure were developed for recreational access after the area became part of the national park.
