Semidi Islands
Island Remote Gulf of Alaska islands with abundant seabirds
A chain of islands off Alaska’s southwestern coast, the Semidi Islands lie within maritime wilderness and attract wildlife‑oriented visitors for seabird colonies, marine mammals and guided boat or fishing trips.
The Semidi Islands are a remote group of islands in the Gulf of Alaska off the southwestern coast of the Alaska Peninsula. They are notable for dense seabird colonies and marine mammal haul-outs rather than human habitation.
A few organized wildlife cruises and research vessels visit the islands to observe large seabird colonies, sea lions, seals, and other marine life. There are no visitor facilities on the islands and landing is uncommon, so most observation is from boats.
The islands have seen little permanent human settlement and are primarily valued for their wildlife. They have been included in Alaska’s network of protected maritime areas used for seabird and marine-mammal conservation.
Situated in the eastern North Pacific off Alaska’s south-central coast, the Semidi Islands lie southwest of the Alaska Peninsula and are part of Alaska’s maritime island groups.
- Access: Access is by boat or chartered vessel; there are no road connections and no permanent settlements on the islands.
- Wildlife: Important habitat for seabirds and marine mammals, so most visits are by wildlife observers or researchers rather than general tourism.
How to Get to Semidi Islands #
The Semidi Islands are accessible only by private boat or chartered vessel and, in some circumstances, by floatplane. The most common staging points are Kodiak Island or Homer; from there trips must be arranged with licensed operators familiar with Aleutian weather and refuge regulations. Landing may be restricted in nesting season - check with the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge for permits.
Tips for Visiting Semidi Islands #
- Bring bear spray and marine-grade foul-weather gear; seas and weather change rapidly in the Aleutians.
- Plan logistics with a local fishing or wildlife-charter operator - private boats and floatplanes are the only practical way in.
- Respect protected bird colonies; many parts of the islands are important seabird nesting sites and may be closed seasonally.
