Selinunte
Museum Ancient Greek archaeological park with extensive temple ruins
On Sicily’s southwest coast, Selinunte exposes extensive Greek ruins: Doric temples, an acropolis and a hilltop theatre amid Mediterranean scrub; visitors walk among columns and archaeological trenches with sea views.
Selinunte is an ancient Greek archaeological site on the southwestern coast of Sicily, preserving the remains of a classical city and multiple temple complexes. The site contains large temple foundations, an acropolis and urban remains from the Greek colonial period.
Visitors can walk among well-spaced ruins set on coastal hills, viewing several temple platforms and sculptural fragments that illustrate Archaic and Classical Greek architecture. The site plan shows religious precincts, an agora area and fortification elements across a broad archaeological park.
Founded in the early first millennium BCE by Greek colonists, Selinunte grew into a significant city-state before suffering destruction during conflicts in the classical era; archaeological excavation has exposed its urban and sacred structures. The ruins reflect phases of construction, destruction and later archaeological investigation.
Selinunte sits on the southwestern shore of Sicily near the modern town of Castelvetrano, occupying coastal hills that look out over the Mediterranean; the surrounding landscape is agricultural and coastal.
- Temple ruins: The extensive ruins include multiple temple platforms and an Acropolis area where visitors can walk among Doric-style temple remains and large stone foundations.
How to Get to Selinunte #
Selinunte is west of Castelvetrano and accessible by car from Palermo (about 1.5-2 hours) or Trapani. Regional buses serve Castelvetrano; from there use local transport or taxis to reach the archaeological park which has on-site parking.
Tips for Visiting Selinunte #
- Visit in the morning light when the temples' Doric columns throw long shadows-this is the moment many photographers prize.
- Bring a hat and water-the open site offers little shade between temples.
- Hire a local guide at the entrance to get deeper readings of the ruins; the site's archaeology is complex and span centuries.
