Seiland National Park
National Park Arctic national park preserving glaciers, islands, and tundra
Seiland National Park protects glaciated peaks, fjord-cut coastline and tundra; visitors hike, kayak, climb, and watch northern lights and seabirds during summer and winter.
Seiland National Park is a protected area on and around Seiland island in northern Norway that conserves coastal mountains, fjords and glaciated high ground. The park preserves a combination of steep sea cliffs, inland valleys and small mountain glaciers.
Alpine hiking routes up to the island’s highest summit, glacier-occupied hollows and dramatic fjord scenery that can be viewed from boats or shoreline tracks. The park is valued for its wild, largely road-free landscapes and opportunities for backcountry walking and sea approaches.
The protected area was designated to conserve the island’s distinctive combination of mountain and coastal environments and the glaciated features found at high elevation. It remains a landscape used for traditional outdoor activities rather than intensive development.
Seiland National Park lies in northern Norway on Seiland island off the coast of Finnmark/Troms og Finnmark, within the Arctic/Northern Norway region. The park’s terrain runs from the shoreline to the island’s interior peaks and is reached by coastal roads and sea transport from nearby communities.
- Landscape mix: The park covers rugged island terrain with a mix of coastal mountains, glaciers and fjords, offering boat access as well as land-based approaches.
- Visitor preparedness: Wild terrain and changeable weather mean preparations for remote hiking and boating are necessary; facilities are limited inside the park.
What to See #
- Seilandstuva: Seilandstuva is the island's highest summit and a common objective for hikers, rising from the coastal landscape to a prominent peak.
- Glaciers and icefields: Small mountain glaciers and icefields occupy high hollows on the island and are visible from coastal approaches and interior routes.
- Fjords and coastline: Coastal fjords and steep sea cliffs form the park's shoreline, where mountains drop directly to the sea in many places.
Tips for Visiting Seiland National Park #
- Plan visits in summer (mid‑June to August) when sea conditions are calmer and landing points on Seiland are most accessible; many interior areas have no road access outside the short summer season.
- Arrange boat or guided kayak transport from the nearest coastal towns rather than assuming road access - much of Seiland's interior is reached by water and guided trips will advise safe landing sites and routes.
- If you intend to approach glaciers or remote ridges, contact local park authorities or guides in advance for up‑to‑date conditions and permitted routes - the park is protected and conditions change rapidly.
