Seahenge
Archaeological Site Bronze Age timber circle discovered on Norfolk beach
On the Norfolk coast, Seahenge is a Bronze Age timber circle excavated from the foreshore; archaeology enthusiasts visit the reconstruction, local museum displays and the surrounding salt-marsh landscape.
Seahenge is a Bronze Age timber circle and central tree trunk feature first exposed by coastal erosion on the Norfolk coast of England in 1998. It is an archaeological site notable for its timber construction and its preservation in a coastal, intertidal environment.
The feature consisted of a ring of upright wooden posts with a central stump and was interpreted as a ceremonial or ritual monument from the early Bronze Age. Its discovery attracted archaeological excavation and subsequent conservation work.
Archaeologists excavated and removed the timber elements after discovery to conserve them and to study construction and dating; research placed the structure in the early Bronze Age. The site and finds prompted public debate about conservation and in situ preservation versus removal.
Seahenge lies on the intertidal beach near Holme-next-the-Sea on Norfolk’s north Norfolk coast, exposed by tidal action and coastal erosion on the North Sea shoreline.
- Discovery: Discovered and excavated after exposure by coastal erosion in 1998, the timber circle dates to the Bronze Age and was removed for conservation.
- Tidal exposure: The site is intertidal and its remains are subject to tidal exposure and coastal change, so visible features depend on tide and erosion.
How to Get to Seahenge #
Holme-next-the-Sea is on the north Norfolk coast. The nearest sizable town with rail links is King’s Lynn; from there, regional buses or taxis run to Holme. The original beach site is reached by a short walk from the village-observe local conservation notices and tide times.
Tips for Visiting Seahenge #
- The original seaward site is fragile-most of Seahenge's timbers are conserved in museums, so check displays before visiting the beach to avoid disappointment.
- If visiting Holme-next-the-Sea, time the visit for low tide to see any remaining visible timbers carefully and to appreciate the coastal context.
- Be discreet with photography on the beach-local authorities can restrict access to protect sensitive archaeology.
Best Time to Visit Seahenge #
Visits are governed by tides and conservation access-check local museum displays and National Trust guidance for the current status before planning a trip.
