Sea organ
Monument Experimental coastal instrument in Zadar producing music from waves
Along Zadar’s waterfront, the Sea Organ uses submerged pipes to produce musical tones as waves move; visitors sit on the Riva to listen and often pair the visit with the adjacent solar ‘Greeting to the Sun’ installation.
The Sea Organ (Morske orgulje) is an experimental musical instrument and public art installation on the waterfront of Zadar, Croatia, completed in 2005. It converts the motion of the Adriatic Sea into sound through a system of submerged pipes and resonating chambers.
Conceived as part of a waterfront redevelopment by architect Nikola Bašić, the Sea Organ was completed in 2005 to revitalize the postwar seafront and provide a new public amenity. It quickly became one of Zadar’s signature contemporary landmarks.
The Sea Organ sits on the western edge of Zadar Old Town on the Adriatic coast, directly on the city’s seafront promenade and within easy walking distance of the historic centre.
- Best time to visit: Best experienced at sunset when the adjacent waterfront and the nearby solar installation create a combined visual and acoustic experience.
- Design and scale: Designed by architect Nikola Bašić and completed in 2005, the installation is about 70 metres long and uses roughly 35 organ pipes to produce tones driven by the sea.
