Schönbrunn Palace is the former imperial summer residence of the Habsburg dynasty in Vienna and one of Austria’s most important historic palaces. The present palace and its extensive gardens reflect Baroque planning and Habsburg court life and are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The palace State Rooms that display imperial apartments and ceremonial rooms, the formal French-style gardens with avenues and parterres, and the Gloriette structure on the garden’s upper terrace. Schönbrunn lies in the Hietzing district, about 4 to 5 kilometres west of Vienna’s historic centre, and is accessible by tram and metro from central Vienna.

Schönbrunn Palace is served directly by the U4 line - get off at Schönbrunn station and walk 5-10 minutes to the main palace entrance. By car the palace is southwest of the city centre (around 6 km from the Innere Stadt) and there are several visitor car parks near the palace grounds.
Tips for Visiting Schönbrunn Palace #
- Book the imperial apartments (timed) online and aim for the first tour of the day to avoid coach‑group surges; late‑afternoon visits to the gardens are also much quieter.
- Use the U4 to Hietzing for the shortest walk to the main palace complex and allow extra time for the vast gardens and the Gloriette viewpoint - the gardens are free and often less crowded than the palace interior.
- If you only have time for one paid experience, prioritize the palace tour early and then explore the grounds and the Schönbrunn Zoo afterwards to escape interior crowds.
