Mountains Hohe Tauern mountain group with rugged alpine peaks
A compact group of peaks in the Eastern Alps favored by climbers and alpine hikers; the Schober group offers rugged terrain, glacial cirques and multi‑day mountaineering routes.
The Schober group is a mountain group within the Hohe Tauern in the Eastern Alps of Austria, notable for its rugged alpine terrain and popularity with mountaineers. It forms part of the complex of high ranges in East Tyrol and adjacent areas.
Rugged peaks, steep ridges and high-alpine routes define the area, with marked trails and alpine-hut networks used as bases for ascents and multi-day treks. The terrain is primarily alpine rock and scree with snowfields at higher elevations, attracting climbers and experienced hikers rather than casual walkers.
The range is the result of the Alpine orogeny and subsequent glacial sculpting over millions of years. Human use has centered on seasonal alpine travel, shepherding and mountaineering since the 19th century as alpinism developed in the Eastern Alps.
Geographically it lies in East Tyrol in Austria, within the Hohe Tauern sector of the Eastern Alps, and is accessed from valley towns in the Lienz area and nearby mountain valleys.
- Access: Alpine routes are mostly for experienced hikers and climbers; summer conditions are the main season for access.
- Best time: Weather can change rapidly at elevation; mountain huts operate on a seasonal schedule and are the usual base for multi-day trips.
