Schipfe

Schipfe is a historic riverside quarter in the Altstadt of Zürich, Switzerland, located along the Limmat River. It is one of the city’s oldest settlement areas and was historically associated with boat traffic and riverside trades.

The lane is characterised by narrow, cobbled streets, tightly spaced historic houses, small cafés and craft shops; it provides direct riverfront walks and visual connections across to the towers of the Grossmünster. The area is compact and typically explored as a short on-foot stroll linking other Old Town sights.

Schipfe developed as a medieval boat landing and riverside neighbourhood and retained much of its small-scale urban fabric through successive periods of reconstruction and conservation. Its buildings and street pattern reflect long-standing urban use rather than large-scale modern redevelopment.

The quarter sits on the bank of the Limmat in Zürich’s Old Town, below the Lindenhof area and adjacent to the Rathaus and Niederdorf districts, within walking distance of the city centre.
