Schauinsland is a mountain in the Black Forest near Freiburg im Breisgau in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, with a summit at approximately 1,284 metres and a long-established reputation for views and mountain recreation.

Schauinsland has a long history of mining for silver and other metals, with mining activity recorded since the Middle Ages; more recently the mountain developed as a recreational area served by the Schauinslandbahn cable car.

The mountain lies east of Freiburg im Breisgau in the Black Forest region of Baden-Württemberg, rising above the Rhine valley and forming a local landmark for the city and surrounding towns.

What to See#

• Schauinslandbahn cable car: The Schauinslandbahn cable car linking the valley station near Horben to the summit station, a roughly 3.6-kilometre ride and one of Germany’s longest continuous cable-car routes.
• Mining heritage: Remains of historic mining activity and a mining trail that interpret the mountain’s silver and lead extraction history for visitors.

The Schauinslandbahn cable car valley station is about 20 minutes by car from Freiburg im Breisgau. Regional buses connect Freiburg to the valley station; driving via B31 and L124 is common. Hiking trails begin on the valley side and at intermediate stations.

• If taking the Schauinslandbahn (cable car), sit on the right-hand side for the most dramatic drop views; windows can fog-take a jacket.
• Hikers should follow the marked routes to the summit for views across the Black Forest and, on clear days, to the Vosges and Swiss Alps.
• Bring a map or use the regional trail markers-mobile reception is spotty in parts of the forest.
