Schaalsee
Lake Shallow lake and biosphere reserve on German border
A chain of lakes on the Mecklenburg-Schleswig border, Schaalsee lies within a UNESCO biosphere reserve; visitors come for birdwatching, canoeing, cycling routes and lakeside towns such as Ratzeburg.
Schaalsee is a freshwater lake in northern Germany located on the boundary between Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is a regionally important natural area with wooded shores and reedbeds.
The lake is used for low-impact recreation such as walking, birdwatching and small-boat activities; shoreline paths and informal observation points make it popular with nature enthusiasts. Several small settlements lie on its shores providing boat launches and trails.
Historically the lake and surrounding wetlands have been managed for fisheries and conservation; the landscape retains a mix of agricultural land, woodland and protected shoreline. Land use has emphasized protection of wetlands and habitat for waterfowl in recent decades.
Geographically the lake sits in a lowland basin of northern Germany, roughly between the towns of Zarrentin and Ratzeburg and about 60-80 km southeast of Lübeck depending on route. The area is a mix of lakes, bogs and forested ridges typical of the region.
- Location: Sits on the border between the German states of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is surrounded by reedbeds and forested shorelines.
- Access: Zarrentin am Schaalsee and Ratzeburg are the nearest towns with visitor facilities and access points on the lake.
