Main image

Scepsis is an ancient Greek city of the Troad region, located in what is now Çanakkale Province in northwestern Turkey. It is known in classical literature for its association with the preservation of Aristotle’s and Theophrastus’s writings.

The site includes archaeological remains of an ancient city and was occupied through classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods; its most famous historical episode concerns Neleus of Scepsis, who is reported to have taken the Peripatetic library to the town for safekeeping. Modern interest focuses on the site’s role in classical scholarship and regional archaeology.

Classical authors record Scepsis as a settlement on the slopes of Mount Ida (modern Kaz Dağı) in the Troad. The ruins lie near a modern village in Çanakkale Province and are part of the wider archaeological landscape of the ancient Troad.

  • Aristotle's library: The city is known in classical sources for the role it played in preserving the library of Aristotle and Theophrastus when Neleus of Scepsis took the works to the town.
