Island Small Outer Hebrides island with steep coastal cliffs
A small island off Scotland’s west coast with abandoned settlements and dramatic cliffs; attracts walkers, birdwatchers and those interested in Hebridean history and boat landings.
Scarp is a small island off the west coast of the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. It is currently uninhabited and contains the remains of former crofting settlement structures.
The island’s visible features are the ruins of cottages and other small buildings from its period of habitation, together with rocky shores and coastal terrain rather than developed visitor facilities. It is of interest mainly to those studying human settlement patterns in the Outer Hebrides or to experienced boaters and sea kayakers.
Scarp was occupied historically but is no longer permanently inhabited; the abandoned settlement buildings remain as the main human-made feature. There are no regular public transport links to the island, so access is by private boat only.
Geographically Scarp lies off the west coast of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, within the maritime landscape of the northwest Scottish isles.
How to Get to Scarp, Scotland #
There is no regular ferry. Access is by private boat from Harris (common embarkation points include Leverburgh or Tarbert) or by booking with a local skipper. Landings can be tricky-rocky shoreline and Atlantic swell-so plan for calm conditions and bring appropriate waterproof gear.
Tips for Visiting Scarp, Scotland #
- Hire an experienced local skipper rather than trying to land from open dinghy-Scarp's rocky shore and Atlantic swell are deceptively sharp.
- If visiting, aim for a calm summer day (June-August) and check tidal charts; some landing spots are only accessible at lower swell.
- Bring a good map and a GPS - there are almost no marked paths and the island's ruins and landscape can disorient.
- Respect loose ruins: many buildings have collapsed mortar and unstable floors; don't explore beyond obvious, safe traces.
Best Time to Visit Scarp, Scotland #
Best visited in late spring to summer for calmer seas and landing opportunities; weather and sea conditions are the determining factors.
