Scaligero Castle (Sirmione)

Scaligero Castle (Rocca Scaligera) in Sirmione is a 13th-century waterfront fortress built by the Della Scala (Scaliger) family on the tip of the Sirmione peninsula on Lake Garda. It is one of Italy’s most complete medieval fortifications that remains largely intact in its plans and water-defence arrangement.

The site is known for its moat, stone bridge entrance and defensive towers that surround an inner courtyard, plus a port area directly on the lake. Visitors typically walk the battlements and inner passageways and photograph the castle’s silhouette against Lake Garda; views from the towers look across the lake and along the peninsula.

Construction dates to the 1200s under the Scaliger lords of Verona, who fortified Sirmione to control lake traffic and protect the settlement. The castle’s role shifted over centuries from military stronghold to local landmark and tourist attraction, with conservation work focused on preserving battlements and masonry.

The castle sits at the end of the narrow Sirmione peninsula on the southern shore of Lake Garda, immediately adjacent to Sirmione town centre. It is about 35-40 km west of Verona and is accessed on foot from Sirmione’s historic centre or by boat across the lake.
