The Scaliger Tombs (Arche Scaligere) are a group of Gothic funerary monuments in Verona, Italy, commemorating members of the Della Scala (Scaliger) family. They date from the 13th and 14th centuries and stand out for their ornate canopies and pinnacles.
A compact, enclosed courtyard contains a cluster of elaborately carved sarcophagi, ornate Gothic canopies and funerary statues arranged along the churchyard of Santa Maria Antica. The group is small and can be seen in a short visit from the outer fence and the churchyard; many details are best viewed at close range through the iron railings.
The monuments were commissioned by Verona’s ruling Scaliger family during their rule in the 1200s and 1300s as family sepulchres and displays of dynastic prestige. The site has been preserved as part of Verona’s historic centre and remains one of the city’s notable medieval funerary ensembles.
The tombs sit in the historic centre of Verona directly beside Santa Maria Antica and near Piazza dei Signori, within easy walking distance of other central attractions.
