Sayram Lake
Lake High-altitude alpine lake in Xinjiang, scenic reservoir

Sayram Lake is an alpine lake in northern Xinjiang, China, known for its clear waters and mountain setting. The lake is the largest alpine freshwater lake in the Xinjiang region and is fed by mountain streams and snowmelt.
Visitors come for shoreline walks, nearby grasslands and seasonal pastoral activities rather than for large-scale recreation facilities. The landscape around the lake features open meadows, rolling hills and a continental mountain climate.
The lake has a glacial and tectonic origin typical of highland basins in this part of Central Asia; it has long been used by local herders and is part of regional travel routes. Conservation and tourism management aim to limit disturbance to the lake’s water and shoreline.
Sayram Lake lies in the northern foothills of the Tianshan range in Xinjiang, a significant distance north of the region’s main urban centres and set within a broad pastoral landscape.
- Regional significance: Recognised regionally as the largest mountain lake in Xinjiang and a common base for summer grazing and tourism in the surrounding alpine meadows.
