Saurimo Travel Guide
City City in Lunda Sul with diamond mining
Remote and raw, the town sits in Lunda Sul’s mining country; travelers come for regional markets, Lunda crafts, vast savanna horizons and the odd conversation about diamond-era history.
Why Visit Saurimo? #
As the capital of Lunda Sul Province, Saurimo sits at the heart of Angola’s diamond country and offers an entry point into Lunda culture. Local markets sell crafts, fabrics and foods tied to regional traditions, and museums and town landmarks reflect the area’s mining past. Surrounding countryside provides opportunities for village visits and low-impact walks. Visitors often come to learn about regional history, artisanal crafts and rural Angolan life.
Who's Saurimo For?
Saurimo is a provincial center for Lunda Sul’s diamond and mining activity, with administrative offices and regional trade. Infrastructure is limited but services exist for workers and company visitors.
The surrounding savanna and remote landscapes offer off-the-beaten-track wildlife and rural scenery for those prepared for basic conditions; guided trips require local contacts and logistical planning.
Remote, sparsely developed areas around Saurimo appeal to adventurous travelers seeking rural exploration, dirt roads and informal village stays - expect minimal tourist services and higher costs to arrange logistics.
As a quiet provincial capital, Saurimo provides simple family accommodations and local markets. It’s practical for family stays tied to work or extended visits rather than leisure tourism.

How to Get to Saurimo
Saurimo is reached most conveniently by air via Saurimo Airport, with regular domestic connections from Luanda. Overland travel is possible by regional coach or shared minibus but can be slow because of long distances and variable road conditions.
Saurimo Airport (VXE): Saurimo is served by a small regional airport just outside town (Saurimo Airport). Taxis between the terminal and the city centre typically take 10-25 minutes depending on traffic; expect roughly $5-$15 for a metered or negotiated taxi ride.
Quatro de Fevereiro / Luanda (LAD): International arrivals normally connect through Luanda’s Quatro de Fevereiro Airport. Domestic flights (most commonly operated by TAAG Angola Airlines and other regional carriers) run between Luanda and Saurimo; flight time is about 1h 30m-2h and fares typically range from around $120-$250 one-way depending on season and how far in advance you book. If you arrive in Luanda and cannot get a same-day domestic flight, overland travel to Saurimo is possible but lengthy (see bus notes).
Train: There is no regular passenger rail service to Saurimo. Angola’s main passenger rail lines do not reach Lunda Sul province, so train travel is not a practical option for getting into the city.
Bus: Intercity coaches and shared minibuses (local “aluguer”/shared taxis) connect Saurimo with nearby towns such as Dundo and provincial hubs. Routes to nearby cities typically take a few hours (for example, Saurimo-Dundo journeys are often 4-7 hours depending on road and border conditions) with fares commonly in the $10-$30 range. Long-distance bus trips (for example to Luanda) can be very long - often overnight or multi-day - and cost more (roughly $30-$70); schedules are irregular, so ask locally and book in advance when possible.
How to Get Around Saurimo
Saurimo is easiest to reach by air; domestic flights from Luanda are the most practical option for most visitors. Within the city, taxis and short shared-minibus routes handle most local travel, while walking works well for short distances in the centre.
- Domestic flights (TAAG & regional) ($120-$250) - TAAG Angola Airlines and other regional carriers operate scheduled flights between Luanda and Saurimo. Flights are the fastest, typically 1.5-2 hours airborne, and are the most reliable way to cover long distances in Angola. Book early for the best fares and expect airport procedures to be more basic than at major international hubs.
- Intercity buses / coaches ($10-$70) - Long-distance coaches and privately run minibuses connect Saurimo with nearby cities and provincial centres. Journeys are often slow because of road quality and checkpoints; expect multi-hour trips even for moderate distances. Use reputable companies where possible, keep valuables secure, and be prepared for irregular departure times.
- Shared taxis / aluguer (minibuses) ($2-$30) - Shared minibuses or aluguer operate on regional routes and are widely used for shorter inter-city trips. They leave when full and are inexpensive, but comfort and punctuality vary. Good option for flexible travel between towns like Dundo and surrounding settlements.
- Taxis ($5-$20) - Metered taxis or negotiated private taxis are the easiest way to get between the airport, bus station and hotels within Saurimo. Fares are modest by international standards but should be agreed or metered up front; credit card acceptance is rare so carry cash (US$ or Angolan kwanza).
- Car hire ($50+/day) - Car rental is available through local operators and national agencies in larger Angolan cities; hiring a 4x4 is recommended if you plan to travel on rural or unpaved roads. Fuel can be expensive and road signage limited, so only self-drive if you are confident with remote driving and local conditions. Hiring a car with a driver is a common, less stressful alternative.
- Walking - Saurimo's central areas are compact enough to explore on foot for short trips between markets, restaurants and hotels. Walking is the best way to get a feel for the town but be cautious after dark and avoid poorly lit or quiet areas. No charge for walking, just comfortable shoes and sun protection.
