Satpura Tiger Reserve is a protected landscape in the Satpura Range of central India, in Madhya Pradesh, that combines multiple national park and sanctuary units to conserve tigers and other wildlife across hilly, forested terrain.

The modern reserve comprises pre-existing protected areas including Satpura National Park, Pachmarhi Sanctuary and Bori Wildlife Sanctuary, brought together under India’s protected-area and tiger-conservation frameworks to maintain habitat connectivity and species protection.

The reserve lies in the Satpura Range of Madhya Pradesh, centred on and around the Pachmarhi uplands, in central India; Pachmarhi acts as the main visitor gateway into the protected zones.

  • Landscape and access: The reserve brings together several protected areas in the Satpura Range and supports a mix of dry deciduous forest, river valleys and rugged hill country that are good for trekking and wildlife viewing.
  • Wildlife highlights: Wildlife commonly reported includes Bengal tiger, leopard, gaur (Indian bison), sloth bear and a range of deer and bird species; boat safaris and jeep safaris are used to access different habitats.

What to See #

  • Satpura National Park: Satpura National Park, a core protected area within the reserve featuring rugged hills, river valleys and much of the region's tiger habitat.
  • Pachmarhi Sanctuary: Pachmarhi Sanctuary, the upland zone centred on the hill station of Pachmarhi that is a hub for visitor accommodation, trekking and viewpoints.
  • Bori Wildlife Sanctuary: Bori Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the older protected tracts in the reserve that contributes forest continuity and riverine habitats used by many species.

How to Get to Satpura Tiger Reserve #

Closest major railheads are Hoshangabad (Narmadapuram) and Pachmarhi; nearest airports are Bhopal (about 150-200 km) or Jabalpur (longer). Road access from Bhopal or Jabalpur via state highways; internal gate coordinates depend on the zone (Pachmarhi, Denwa, or Bori). Book safaris and permits through the official reserve website or the local DFO office.

Tips for Visiting Satpura Tiger Reserve #

  • Book guided safaris in advance-vehicles are limited and permits often sell out during peak season.
  • Ask guides about the reserve's difference from other MP tiger reserves: Satpura's rugged, hilly terrain makes wildlife sightings less predictable but more intimate.
  • Hire a forest guide affiliated with the reserve rather than an independent driver; accredited guides know where trails are safe and where animals are likely to be.
