The Satpura Range is an east-west mountain chain in central India running largely through Madhya Pradesh and forming part of the central highlands. It lies roughly parallel to the Vindhya Range and forms a natural buffer between the Narmada valley to the north and the Deccan plateau to the south.

The range includes forested hills, plateaus and river valleys and contains protected areas and hill stations such as Pachmarhi and Satpura National Park, which are visited for trekking, wildlife viewing and local waterfalls. The range’s highest summit, Dhoopgarh, is a noted viewpoint.

Geologically the Satpuras are part of the Deccan highland system and support a mix of dry deciduous and moist forest types; they have been important historically as a region for tribal communities, forest resources and seasonal grazing.

The Satpura hills extend across central India, with much of the range lying in Madhya Pradesh and influencing regional hydrology and climate between the northern plains and southern plateau.

  • Highest point: Dhoopgarh is the highest point of the Satpura Range and is a popular vantage point for sunrise views over the central Indian plateau.

What to See #

  • Pachmarhi: Pachmarhi is a hill station and small town inside the range known for colonial-era buildings, viewpoints and caves; it acts as an administrative and tourist centre for the Satpura hills.
  • Satpura National Park: Satpura National Park protects areas of central Satpura habitat and is important for wildlife conservation, trekking and guided safaris.
  • Dhoopgarh peak: Dhoopgarh (Dhupgarh) is the range's highest peak and a popular viewpoint for sunrise and panoramic views of the surrounding plateau.
