Satala
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman military site with archaeological ruins
Near Erzincan, Satala preserves Roman and Byzantine military remains: fort walls, baths and a river crossing; archaeologists and history-minded visitors come to inspect the site’s inscriptions and masonry.
Satala is the site of an ancient Roman and later Byzantine military settlement and fortress located in modern Erzincan Province, eastern Turkey. It functioned as a strategic garrison and transit point on ancient frontier routes.
Remains at the site include fortress walls, foundations and traces of military and civic structures that reflect its role as a late antique and medieval military centre. The site illustrates frontier defence and settlement patterns in eastern Anatolia.
The settlement was occupied and used during Roman and Byzantine periods and saw changes in military and administrative function over time as imperial frontiers shifted.
Geographically the ruins lie inland in Erzincan Province in northeastern Anatolia, in a landscape of plateaus and river valleys that linked the interior of the empire with eastern routes.
- Visible ruins: Surviving earthworks and stone foundations mark the site of a Roman and Byzantine military installation; archaeological remains are visible but largely unexcavated in places.
