Saser Kangri
Mountain Major Karakoram mountain massif in Ladakh
In Ladakh’s Saser Muztagh range, Saser Kangri is a high Karakoram massif; mountaineers attempt technical routes amid glaciers, with approaches across high mountain passes.
Saser Kangri is a group of high peaks in the Saser Muztagh subrange of the Karakoram in the Ladakh region of India. The massif includes multiple summits that rise to very high altitudes and form part of a rugged, glaciated mountain chain.
The main peak, Saser Kangri I, reaches about 7,672 metres and presents serious technical mountaineering challenges, including sustained high-altitude climbing and complex glacier approaches. The area is primarily visited by experienced climbers rather than general tourists.
The peaks are part of the eastern Karakoram and are accessed from valleys in Ladakh; approaches are long and remote with limited local infrastructure. Conditions are dependent on high-altitude weather and glacier conditions.
- Climbing conditions: The massif is remote and technical, requiring glacier travel, crevasse navigation and high-altitude climbing experience; access typically begins from routes in eastern Ladakh.
What to See #
- Saser Kangri I: The highest summit in the group, rising to about 7,672 metres and forming the principal objective for technical mountaineering teams.
How to Get to Saser Kangri #
Access to Saser Kangri begins from Leh (Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport). From Leh an overland approach toward the Nubra/Shyok valley (via the high passes north of Leh) is required to reach the nearest roadheads; from there the mountain is reached only by multi‑day 4x4 approaches and high‑altitude trekking or technical mountaineering. Organise the route with an experienced expedition operator and secure necessary permits before travelling.
Tips for Visiting Saser Kangri #
- Saser Kangri lies in a remote, sensitive border region-secure all required permits from Indian authorities and register expeditions through the Indian Mountaineering Foundation well before travel.
- Plan climbs in the established summer window (generally June-August) and allow ample time for acclimatization in Leh and approach logistics into Nubra; local operators are essential for safe glacier and high‑altitude support.
- Expect minimal infrastructure near the mountain-arrange full expedition support (high-altitude guides, porters, communications and contingency plans) and obtain any liaison or police permits required by Ladakh administration.
