Saria Island
Island Small Greek island in Dodecanese near Rhodes
Small island in Greece’s South Aegean, reached by boat from neighboring isles. Visitors come for quiet coastal walks, simple fishing villages and to explore rocky shores and local marine scenery.
Saria is a small, rocky islet in the South Aegean, located off the northern coast of the island of Karpathos. It is uninhabited in modern times and noted for its rugged coastline and maritime access.
Coastal cliffs, small coves and sea caves characterize the shoreline, and the islet is separated from Karpathos by a narrow channel that is commonly crossed by small boats. There are no large facilities on Saria and visitors typically approach by private boat for short landings and coastal exploration.
Recorded modern habitation is absent; the islet has traditionally been used intermittently by fishermen and for seasonal grazing rather than as a permanently settled community. Archaeological and historical records on the islet are limited compared with nearby Karpathos.
Geographically Saria sits immediately north of Karpathos in the Dodecanese archipelago of Greece, within the administrative region of the South Aegean. The nearest inhabited settlements are on Karpathos itself.
Tips for Visiting Saria Island #
- Plan a morning landing when seas are typically calmer and local boat operators run day trips from nearby islands (Kasos or Karpathos are common bases) rather than attempting independent landings.
- Arrange transport with a licensed local skipper and confirm landing permissions ahead of time; Saria is largely uninhabited with limited facilities, so itineraries depend on local operators' experience.
- Most visitors only view the island from boats - if you land, focus on short coastal hikes and wildlife viewing rather than expecting services or marked trails.
Best Time to Visit Saria Island #
