Sarek National Park
Park Remote Swedish mountain park, wilderness and glaciated peaks
Remote wilderness in Swedish Lapland, characterised by high peaks, glaciers and river valleys. Popular among experienced hikers and backcountry skiers; the area has few marked trails and ongoing reindeer husbandry.
Sarek National Park is a large, remote protected area in Swedish Lapland, established in 1909 and known for its rugged, glacier-carved mountains and deep valleys. The park is part of the larger Laponia World Heritage area that recognises the region’s natural and cultural values.
The landscape is alpine and largely roadless, with numerous glaciers and high peaks forming complex drainage systems and wild valleys; the Rapa Valley is one of the park’s most striking features. Visitors typically travel for serious backcountry hiking, mountaineering and scientific study; there are few services and trails are often unmarked.
Over time the park’s boundaries and management have focused on preserving intact wilderness and the area’s ecological processes while recognising traditional Sami land uses. Its status within Laponia reflects both natural and cultural heritage values.
Geographically Sarek lies in central northern Sweden within Norrbotten County, across the Scandinavian mountain chain in Swedish Lapland, inland from coastal towns to the east and north.
- Wilderness conditions: Visitor infrastructure is minimal - trails are largely unmarked and there are virtually no staffed mountain huts, so travel is for experienced, self-sufficient hikers.
- Protection status: Established in the early 20th century and later included in the Laponia UNESCO World Heritage area, the park is renowned for its pristine Arctic-alpine landscapes.
What to See #
- Rapa Valley (Rapaälven): A broad valley carved by the Rapa River, famous for its striking delta and open views of surrounding peaks and glaciers, frequently visited by experienced trekkers.
- Alpine massifs and glaciers: Remote mountain massifs and glacier systems that form the core of the park's alpine terrain, offering high, rugged peaks and glacial basins.
How to Get to Sarek National Park #
Sarek National Park is a remote, road‑less area in northern Sweden with no through‑roads; access is via trailheads and mountain huts reached from nearby towns. Common approaches are from Jokkmokk, Gällivare or the village of Kvikkjokk: take train or bus to one of these towns and then drive or take local transport to an entry point (Kvikkjokk is a well‑used gateway). Once at a gateway you must continue on foot or by river - there are no roads through the park, so visitors need to be prepared for multi‑day wilderness travel.
Tips for Visiting Sarek National Park #
- Sarek National Park has virtually no marked trails, huts or roads-only experienced, well-equipped hikers or guided groups should attempt multi-day routes, and navigation skills are essential.
- Plan trips in the main summer window (roughly June-August) when snow is least extensive; even then, river crossings and alpine conditions can be challenging, so allow extra days and flexible routing.
- Access to Sarek is normally via established mountain stations and trailheads such as Kvikkjokk or Ritsem-use these gateways for logistics and local transport rather than attempting ad-hoc drop-offs deeper into the park.
Best Time to Visit Sarek National Park #
Best visited in midsummer (June-August) for accessible trails, long daylight and the best conditions for trekking; winter is suitable only for experienced backcountry travel.
