Saray-Jük
Administrative Seat Ruined medieval trading settlement on historic trade routes
An archaeological site on Kazakhstan’s lower Ural steppe, Saray-Jük preserves ruins of a medieval trading town once linked to Silk Road routes; visitors explore earthworks and scattered foundations.
Saray-Jük is the archaeological site of a medieval riverside settlement and trading centre on the Ural River in what is now Atyrau Region, Kazakhstan. It was a regional port and market town that linked steppe trade routes with riverine navigation.
The visible remains include foundations, debris fields and burial features that attest to an extended period of occupation during the medieval era. The site represents an example of a Silk Road-era river port rather than a continuously inhabited modern town.
Historical sources and archaeological work indicate the settlement flourished as a trading and craft centre in the medieval period and later declined and was abandoned as trade patterns and river courses changed.
The ruins lie along the Ural River in western Kazakhstan, within Atyrau Region, in the broad flatlands that form the borderland between Europe and Asia.
