São Tomé (island)
Island Principal São Tomé island with capital and volcanic highlands
São Tomé island forms the larger half of the nation, with colonial towns, cocoa plantations, rainforest trails to Pico de São Tomé and coastal beaches used for fishing and diving.
São Tomé is the main island of the nation of São Tomé and Príncipe in the Gulf of Guinea, and contains the national capital, São Tomé. It is the larger and more populous of the country’s two main islands and forms the political and economic centre of the state.
The island is noted for a rugged volcanic interior and coastal lowlands. Visitors find a mix of colonial-era plantation estates, black-sand and palm-lined beaches, and protected rainforest in the highlands; the interior contains trails and viewpoints that reach the island’s higher volcanic ridges. The capital town offers markets, colonial architecture and ferry connections to the smaller island of Príncipe.
Portuguese explorers discovered and began settling the island in the late 15th century and established plantation agriculture-first sugar, later cocoa and coffee-which shaped much of its landscape and settlement pattern. Over time the island transitioned from plantation economy to a national capital and tourist destination, while forested highlands have gained protection as reserves.
The island lies near the equator in the Gulf of Guinea off the west coast of Central Africa; the town of São Tomé sits on the northeast shore. The island is the principal inhabited landmass of São Tomé Province and is surrounded by smaller islets and reefs.
- Location: Located almost on the equator in the Gulf of Guinea, the island is the larger of the two main islands of the country and contains the national capital.
- Nature: The interior is volcanic and rugged, with rainforest reserves that protect endemic birds and plants and offer hiking routes up the island's higher ridges.
What to See #
- São Tomé town: Home to the national capital, it contains the urban centre of São Tomé on the northeastern coast and several coastal fishing villages that act as local transport and market hubs.
- Obô Natural Park: A protected montane rainforest reserve covering much of the island interior, important for endemic species and for trails that reach the higher volcanic ridges.
- Plantation roças: Scattered colonial-era plantation estates and former cocoa and coffee roças, many of which have visible 19th-century architecture and are used today for tourism or agriculture.
