São Jorge Island
Island Azores island known for volcanic landscapes and tea
In the Azores, São Jorge features steep cliffs, coastal fajãs and hiking trails; visitors seek walking routes, local cheese production and boat trips for whale and dolphin watching.
São Jorge Island is a long, narrow island in the central Azores archipelago, situated between the islands of Pico and Faial. It is volcanic in origin and notable for a steep central ridge and many coastal plateaus called fajãs.
The island’s coastline features dozens of fajãs - low-lying, often fertile areas created by lava flows or landslides that host small communities, pastures and terraces. Visitors are drawn to coastal trails, scenic viewpoints and traditional agriculture, including the island’s well-known cheese production.
Geologically the island is defined by a central volcanic ridge running the length of São Jorge, with steep cliffs on the seaward sides and fertile fajãs at the base of the slopes. The island has a rural character with small villages linked by a network of roads and footpaths.
São Jorge lies in the central group of the Azores in the North Atlantic and is reached by ferry and short flights from other Azorean islands. It forms part of the Portuguese autonomous region of the Azores.
- Fajãs and topography: The island is characterised by a narrow volcanic ridge and dozens of coastal 'fajãs' - flat, fertile plateaus formed by lava flows or landslides - which host small settlements and agriculture.
- Highest point: The highest point, Pico da Esperança, reaches approximately 1,053 metres and provides panoramic views across the central Azores islands on clear days.
What to See #
- Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo: Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo - a coastal flatland with a lagoon famous for its scenic setting and traditional fishing paths, accessible by foottrack.
- Fajã dos Cubres: Fajã dos Cubres - notable for a small coastal lagoon and a designated natural area with birdlife and native vegetation.
How to Get to São Jorge Island #
São Jorge Island (Azores) is served by inter‑island flights from other Azores airports (Ponta Delgada, Terceira, Pico, Faial) to the island’s airport near Velas, and by ferries operated by Atlânticoline connecting Horta (Faial), Pico and Terceira to São Jorge’s ports (Velas and Calheta). Once on the island, rent a car or use local buses to reach towns and trailheads - the island’s main coastal road links Velas and Calheta and the island is roughly 50-60 km end to end, so driving distances on the island are short.
Tips for Visiting São Jorge Island #
- Plan connections around ferry timetables: inter-island ferries (from Pico, Faial or Terceira) are limited and frequently canceled in rough seas, so allow extra travel time and flexibility.
- Explore one or two fajãs (coastal flatlands) such as Fajã dos Cubres or Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo - many visitors stick to the ridge and miss these distinctive lowland landscapes accessible by road or on foot.
- Use local bus schedules or arrange a taxi for early starts to trailheads; public transport on São Jorge is infrequent, so timing matters if you want to reach a specific hike or viewpoint on the same day.
Best Time to Visit São Jorge Island #
Late spring through early autumn offers the most reliable weather for hiking and coastal activities on São Jorge Island.
