Santiniketan is a township in the Bolpur subdivision of Birbhum district, West Bengal, India, known as the location of Rabindranath Tagore’s educational project and the Visva-Bharati university. It is a cultural and educational centre that developed around Tagore’s institutions in the early 20th century.

The site is dominated by the university campus and its associated cultural institutions. Key places include the central Visva-Bharati campus with lecture halls, residential quadrangles and galleries, and the Kala Bhavana art faculty with exhibition spaces and workshops. The town is also known for regular cultural events and a strong emphasis on music, dance and visual arts.

Santiniketan began as a retreat established by Debendranath Tagore in the 19th century and expanded by his son Rabindranath Tagore into an educational complex. Rabindranath formally founded Visva-Bharati in 1921; the institution later received central university status in 1951.

Santiniketan is the township around Bolpur Shantiniketan in West Bengal. The site is served by Bolpur Shantiniketan railway station on the Howrah-New Jalpaiguri route with regular trains from Howrah (Kolkata); from Bolpur station the university and town are a short taxi/auto‑rickshaw ride (a few kilometres, typically 10-15 minutes). By road Santiniketan is roughly 150-170 km from Kolkata (a 3-4 hour drive depending on traffic).

• Plan your visit November-February to avoid the Bengal monsoon and to enjoy cultural events like Poush Mela (December); visiting during the university term lets you see student life and daily performances.
• Travel via Bolpur (Bolpur-Santiniketan railway station) and take a short local tuk‑tuk or rickshaw into the campus area - it's the usual arrival route and saves time compared with more distant stations.
