Sant'Ignazio, Rome

Sant’Ignazio is a 17th-century Baroque church in Rome built for the Jesuit Collegio Romano and noted for its grand interior decoration. The building is especially famous for its large illusionistic ceiling fresco by Andrea Pozzo, which creates a painted ‘dome’ and dramatic perspectival effect.

The interior features a long nave with richly ornamented side chapels and a high altar, while Pozzo’s fresco (late 17th century) covers the vault and employs trompe-l’oeil to extend the visual space. Many visitors come specifically to study the ceiling and the use of perspective.

Construction began in the early 17th century under Jesuit patronage and the church was completed across that century as part of the Collegio Romano complex.
