Santa Susanna
Religious Site Renaissance church on Rome's Via del Tritone
Santa Susanna is a historic church in Rome located in the area between the Quirinal and the Via XX Settembre thoroughfare, built on an early Christian site and extensively rebuilt in the post-medieval period. The building is notable for its early Baroque exterior and its role as a parish church.
The church’s interior and chapels reflect successive campaigns of renovation and decoration from the Renaissance and Baroque periods rather than a single uniform phase. It continues to serve liturgical and community functions for the surrounding neighbourhood.
The site has been occupied by a Christian church since antiquity and was remodelled in the 16th and 17th centuries to produce much of the present architectural appearance.
Santa Susanna stands on Via XX Settembre in Rome’s central district, in the broad urban area between the Trevi and Quirinal quarters.
