Hiking, birdwatching and backcountry recreation draw visitors - trails lead to forested ridgelines and summits, while Madera Canyon on the range’s east side is a well-known birding area with multiple trailheads and picnic facilities. How to Get to Santa Rita Mountains #

The Santa Rita Mountains are in southern Arizona south of Tucson and are most easily reached by car. From Tucson allow roughly 1-1.5 hours driving to reach popular access points such as Madera Canyon and the Mount Wrightson trailheads; expect to use Arizona state and local highways and then forest or canyon access roads to parking areas. Trailheads have parking and the mountains are accessed on foot from those lots.

Tips for Visiting Santa Rita Mountains #

  • If you're hiking Mount Wrightson or popular trails, start predawn to avoid afternoon monsoon storms and to beat the busiest hours at Madera Canyon trailheads; afternoon thunderstorms are common July-September.
  • Approach the range via Madera Canyon (the main access for Mount Wrightson and many trails) and use the official trailhead parking-this is also the best spot for birding, where many visitors linger at roadside feeders and overlook areas.
  • To avoid the busiest weekends, plan weekday visits or combine a shorter canyon hike with early-morning birding; many day visitors focus only on the main trail and miss the quieter side trails and higher-elevation viewpoints.
