Santa Maria Island
Island Easternmost Azores island with volcanic cliffs and beaches

Santa Maria Island is an island in the Azores archipelago of Portugal, noted as one of the nine islands in the group. It is the southeasternmost island of the Azores and is smaller and flatter than many of the other islands.
The coastline includes sandy beaches and cliffs; Praia Formosa is the island’s main sandy beach and a local recreational focus. The Barreiro da Faneca is a striking area of reddish clay and badlands that contrasts with the island’s green interior. Pico Alto, at about 590 meters, provides the highest viewpoints and several marked trails for day hikes.
The island was settled by the Portuguese in the 15th century and developed an economy based on agriculture, fishing, and maritime connections within the archipelago. Over time it retained a rural character compared with larger Azorean islands and has conserved many traditional buildings and small harbors.
Santa Maria lies in the central North Atlantic within the Azores, southeast of the archipelago’s other main islands. The main settlement is Vila do Porto, which serves as the island’s transport and service hub.
