The Central Zone of the Town of Angra do Heroedsmo is the historic core of the main town on Terceira Island in the Azores, Portugal, centred on the harbour and enclosed by historic fortifications and civic buildings. The towns layout and built fabric reflect its role as a maritime hub and a stopover for Atlantic navigation from the 15th century onward.

Key elements include the peninsula of Monte Brasil with its fortress works, the cathedral (Sé) and the main civic square Praça Velha, plus a dense network of streets, churches and noble houses dating mainly from the 16th to 18th centuries. The harbourfront and defensive works reveal the strategic planning that protected the town and port over several centuries.

The historic centre sits on Terceira Island in the central North Atlantic, part of the Azores archipelago, with the town occupying a sheltered bay and Monte Brasil forming a volcanic peninsula that shelters the harbour. Angra is connected by air and sea to other Azorean islands and mainland Portugal.

• Monte Brasil fortress: Monte Brasil and its fortress (Forte de Se3o Joe3o Baptista) dominate the natural harbour and include 16th to 19th century fortifications guarding the bay.
• Sé Cathedral and Praça Velha: Sé Cathedral and the historic churches and civic buildings around the Praça Velha form the historic urban core with religious and municipal architecture from the 16th century onward.
• Harbourfront: Harbourfront and quays reflect the towns long role as a transatlantic port and anchorage with maritime infrastructure and storage buildings lining the bay.

Terceira is served by Lajes Airport (TER); from the airport it’s a 20-25 minute drive to Angra do Heroísmo. Ferries connect Terceira with other Azores islands seasonally.

• Walk the waterfront early in the morning for pale light on the harbor and fewer cruise-ship crowds.
• Explore the narrow alleys away from the main Avenida D. João III to find 18th-century tiles and quiet cafés.
• If driving between islands of Terceira, allow extra time for parking and narrow streets in the historic core.
