Santa María de Melque

Santa María de Melque is an early medieval church and former monastic complex in the province of Toledo, Castilla-La Mancha. It is commonly identified as a Visigothic-period site and is valued for its preservation and continuity from late antiquity into the early Middle Ages.

Built on a site with Roman occupation, the complex developed in the 7th-8th centuries CE during the Visigothic and early medieval period as a monastic establishment and place of worship. Over subsequent centuries the site fell into ruin, and today the church and surrounding remains are preserved as a monument illustrating early medieval Iberian architecture.

The complex is located in the rural territory of Toledo province near the village of San Martín de Montalbán, within the plains west of the central Castilian highlands and accessible by local roads from nearby towns.
