European explorers named many islands in the Solomons during the 16th and 17th centuries; Santa Isabel has continued as a provincial centre and home to local communities. The island remains relatively remote compared with major regional travel hubs.
Santa Isabel sits in the northeastern part of the Solomon Islands chain within Isabel Province, with Buala on the island serving as the main local town and point of access.
- Administrative centre: Buala is the main administrative town and transport hub on the island, with boat connections to other Solomon Islands centres.

- Plan travel for the dry season (roughly May-October) when inter-island boat services and flights are more reliable and jungle tracks are drier.
- Use Buala (the island's provincial centre) as your arrival point - most scheduled domestic flights and ferries land there, and it's the best place to arrange village hosts and local guides.
- Arrange a local guide through Buala to reach inland waterfalls, rivers and cultural village stays; much of Santa Isabel's interior is undeveloped and best accessed with someone who knows the tracks and local customs.
