Santa Fosca, Venice

Santa Fosca is a small medieval church on the island of Torcello in the northern Venetian lagoon, noted for its compact, historically Byzantine-influenced plan. It stands close to Torcello’s larger cathedral and forms part of the island’s small ecclesiastical complex.

The church presents a central-plan form and simple exterior; visits are normally combined with the neighbouring Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the island’s archaeological remains. Torcello itself is quiet compared with central Venice and is visited for its early medieval architecture and mosaics.

Santa Fosca was built in the early medieval period as part of Torcello’s role as one of the earliest settled islands in the lagoon and served the religious needs of the local community. Over time the island’s population declined and the churches became preserved monuments rather than active parish centres.

Torcello lies in the northern part of the Venetian lagoon, reached by boat from Murano, Burano or the main Venice islands; Santa Fosca stands close to the island’s primary landing point and open grassed area.
