Santa Cruz, Seville

Barrio Santa Cruz is Seville’s historic Jewish quarter, located east of the Cathedral and one of the city’s principal old neighbourhoods. The area is noted for its dense network of narrow streets, small plazas and ornamental private patios.

A maze of lanes leads to small squares, shaded patios and tightly packed tapas bars and restaurants; narrow alleys open onto plazas such as Plaza de Santa Cruz where visitors find cafés and fountains. The neighbourhood sits directly beside major monuments, so many visits combine a stroll through the barrio with stops at the Cathedral and the Reales Alcázares.

The quarter developed as Seville’s Jewish neighbourhood in the medieval period and remained a distinct urban area until the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492. Over subsequent centuries it was reshaped by Christian institutions and later 19th- and 20th-century urban developments, but many narrow street patterns and courtyard layouts survive.

Santa Cruz occupies the central district of Seville’s historic core, tucked between the Cathedral to the west and the river to the south. Streets are pedestrian-friendly and the area is reachable on foot from major city points and public-transport stops.

• Timing: Best visited early in the morning or late evening to avoid the busiest daytime crowds and to see quieter streets and open courtyards.
• Proximity: Immediately adjacent to the Cathedral and the Reales Alcázares, making it easy to combine those monuments with a walk through the quarter.
