Santa Cruz Island
Island Largest Channel Island, diverse wildlife and sea caves
Santa Cruz Island, the largest of California’s Channel Islands, offers coastal cliffs, sea caves, endemic flora and opportunities for kayaking, snorkeling and backcountry camping.
Santa Cruz Island is the largest island in the Channel Islands archipelago off the coast of Southern California and is mostly managed for conservation as part of Channel Islands National Park and the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. It contains coastal cliffs, sea caves, grasslands and oak woodland habitats supporting endemic species.
Visitor access is limited and typically involves a scheduled boat from the mainland to designated landing points such as Scorpion Anchorage; the island offers trails, campgrounds and guided natural-history opportunities. Notable features include archaeological sites associated with the Chumash people and wildlife such as the island fox and seabird colonies.
The island’s modern history includes long periods of ranching in the 19th and early 20th centuries followed by protective measures in the late 20th century; the Channel Islands National Park was established in 1980 and the island has been subject to restoration and conservation programmes since then.
Geographically the island lies within the Santa Barbara Channel, off the coast of Southern California, separated from the mainland by the channel waters and reached by park concession boats.
- Protected status: The largest of the Channel Islands off Southern California, it is part of Channel Islands National Park and the surrounding marine sanctuary, managed for conservation and low-impact visitation.
- Access: Boat access is required from the mainland; Scorpion Anchorage on the east side is the primary visitor landing with a short walking distance to the campground and trails.
What to See #
- Scorpion Anchorage: Scorpion Anchorage on the island's east side, a frequent landing point for park boats with a campground, visitor facilities and trails into the island's interior.
- West coast anchorages: Prisoners Harbor (western side) and other coastal coves that provide sheltered anchorages, archaeological sites and access to native plant communities and sea cliffs.
- Interior habitats: Interior grasslands, oak woodlands and archaeological sites associated with the Chumash people, plus populations of endemic species such as the island fox.
How to Get to Santa Cruz Island #
Santa Cruz Island (Channel Islands, California) is reached by boat from the mainland. Regular passenger ferry service to Santa Cruz Island is provided by Island Packers departing Ventura Harbor (and sometimes Oxnard); crossings and schedules vary seasonally and the crossing typically takes on the order of 1-2 hours. Drive to Ventura Harbor (about an hour from Santa Barbara, roughly 1.5-2 hours from Los Angeles depending on traffic) and board the scheduled ferry or a licensed private boat charter to the island.
Tips for Visiting Santa Cruz Island #
- Book the boat (Island Packers or other official operator) well in advance and aim for the earliest landing - day-trip seats are limited and morning landings give you the most time ashore before afternoon wind and chop increase.
- Land at Scorpion Anchorage and use the visitor center as your orientation point; many visitors stick to the shoreline, but a short hike from the anchorage opens up viewpoints, sea caves and quieter stretches of coast.
- If your schedule allows, plan an overnight campsite permit - staying after the day-trip boats leave lets you see wildlife and seabird colonies with far fewer people and gives access to longer trails.
Best Time to Visit Santa Cruz Island #
Late summer to early autumn (Sept-Oct) often provides the clearest weather and calmer seas for visiting the island and seeing wildlife.
