Santa Catalina Mountains
Mountains Sky island mountain range north of Tucson, Arizona
North of Tucson, the Santa Catalina Mountains include Mount Lemmon and the Catalina Highway; visitors come for high-elevation hiking, seasonal recreation, a scenic drive and cooler forested trails compared with the desert below.
The Santa Catalina Mountains are a prominent mountain range immediately north of Tucson in southern Arizona, with the highest peak, Mount Lemmon, rising to 9,159 feet (2,792 metres). The range forms a significant ‘sky island’ with distinct ecological zones from desert scrub to mixed conifer at high elevation.
Outdoor recreation is the main draw - the area offers hundreds of miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails, campgrounds, and scenic drives, including the paved road that ascends to Mount Lemmon and a small alpine ski area near the summit. Foothill attractions such as Catalina State Park and Sabino Canyon provide accessible trails and visitor facilities.
Geologically and ecologically the range supports desert at the base and pine-fir woodlands higher up, creating strong seasonal contrasts in temperature and vegetation. The sequence of plant communities makes it a notable area for birding and natural history study.
The mountains lie north of the city of Tucson in Pima County and are managed largely within the Coronado National Forest; principal access is from Tucson, Oro Valley and nearby communities.
- Seasonal access: Summit conditions vary seasonally - summer is popular for cooler mountain weather and winter can bring snow and a small ski area at the top.
- Access and management: Managed largely within the Coronado National Forest, many trailheads are reached from Tucson and Oro Valley and day permits or parking fees may apply at popular trailheads.
What to See #
- Mount Lemmon: Highest summit of the range at 9,159 feet (2,792 metres) with a paved road and ski area on the upper slopes.
- Foothill parks: Catalina State Park and Sabino Canyon lie in the foothills and provide trailheads, picnic areas and visitor facilities for day hiking and birding.
