Castillo de Santa Bárbara is a hilltop fortress above Alicante on Mount Benacantil, with origins going back to the medieval period and a commanding position over the city and harbour.

The site comprises extensive ramparts and terraces that give uninterrupted views across Alicante, the harbour and the Mediterranean Sea for several kilometres; the summit area and battlements are the main visitor highlights.

Founded in the medieval era on a strategic rock, the fortress was expanded and modified over centuries and remained a military stronghold into the early modern period before becoming a civic monument and museum site.

The castle occupies the steep slopes and summit of Mount Benacantil immediately above Alicante’s old town and Postiguet Beach, about 0 km from the city centre and clearly visible from the harbour.

• Height and views: The castle sits on Mount Benacantil at about 166 metres above sea level and dominates Alicante’s skyline, providing panoramic views over the city and Mediterranean.
• Access routes: Visitors can reach the fortifications on foot by a steep path or by a panoramic lift that links the city base with the castle plateau.

From Alicante centre, walk up Calle San Fernando toward the base of Benacantil (30-40 minutes uphill), take the public elevator (Castillo Elevator) from Calle Pintor Gisbert for a short lift ride, or catch local buses that stop near the castle entrance.

• Take the elevator from Alicante's castle entrance on Calle Pintor Gisbert to avoid a steep climb when arriving from the city.
• Go at sunset: the city below turns to gold and the Mediterranean becomes a strip of mercury.
