Palace Rococo summer palace surrounded by terraced gardens
Frederick the Great’s Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam is a terraced Rococo summer residence set among vineyards and formal gardens. Visitors tour palace interiors, walk landscaped paths and connect to surrounding parks and historic Potsdam sites.
Sanssouci Palace is an 18th-century Rococo summer palace built for Frederick the Great near Potsdam, Germany, set within an extensive landscaped park. Constructed 1745-1747, it served as the monarch’s private retreat and focal point of a larger palace and garden ensemble.
The palace is best known for its intimate rococo rooms and the terraced vineyards that descend from the palace facade. Beyond the main palace, Sanssouci Park contains several major buildings including the New Palace, the Chinese House and the Orangery, forming a broad landscaped complex of architecture and formal gardens.
The park and palaces are a major cultural attraction, with walking routes, sightlines and numerous smaller follies and museum spaces to explore. Many visitors combine a visit with the nearby Potsdam palaces and the historic city center.
Commissioned by Frederick the Great and designed by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, Sanssouci was built in the mid-18th century as a private royal retreat and later expanded by additional palaces and garden buildings. The ensemble is part of the Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin UNESCO World Heritage inscription.
Located in Potsdam on the outskirts of Berlin, Sanssouci sits on a gentle ridge above terraced gardens and is about 25 km southwest of central Berlin, within easy rail and road connections from the capital.
- Park size and planning: Sanssouci Park covers roughly 290 hectares and contains multiple palaces and garden buildings, so allow time to walk between sites or use park transport where available.
- Access and tours: The palace interiors and many adjoining buildings are subject to timed entry and guided tours; check opening times especially in winter months.
What to See #
- New Palace (Neues Palais): The New Palace (Neues Palais) is a large late-Baroque palace built 1763-1769 with state rooms and formal gallery spaces located at the western end of the park.
- Chinese House: The Chinese House is an 18th-century garden pavilion in chinoiserie style set within the terraced gardens above Sanssouci Palace.
- Orangery: The Orangery is an 18th-century building in the park used historically to overwinter citrus trees and now part of the park ensemble and visitor route.
